xNET - the proprietary name for MacXperts' 'LessStress' Internet Web presence.
SpamAssassin - a filter that, by applying a rule base and wide range of heuristic tests to email headers and body texts, identifies unsolicited commercial email - referred to as 'spam'. SpamAssassin analysis of 'header texts' - identifies procedures used by 'spammers' - to mask their identity, to insinuate that their mail is valid, or to lead you believe that you have subscribed to something. SpamAssassin's analysis of 'body text' - identifies characteristic 'spam' styles, disclaimers and CYA text. In addition, SpamAssassin collaborates with other anti-spam organisations such as Vipul's Razor - a networked database that uses statistical and randomized signatures to detect, track and filter 'mutating spam'. Such commercial co-operations make it possible for Razor to maintain constantly updated catalogues of 'spam in propagation' for all to automatically block.
ISP - short for Internet Service Provider - identifies companies that sell access to the Internet.
POP - short for Post Office Protocol - now outdated remote mail access technology.
IMAP - short for Internet Message Access Protocol - is a sophisticated mechanism to retrieve email messages - that allows more complex interactions, and more efficient access to mail servers, than POP technology. For example, full utilisation of available bandwidth and the ability to search email messages for keywords on mail servers, prior to download. IMAP is based on the concept that the server is the primary mail repository for messages to be retained. This enables you to access your information on our server, from any of the computers you use. It is, in effect, your 'virtual mailbox' - to which commands may be sent, to download or delete messages, or to access and set message state information.
SMTP - short for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - a mechanism for sending email messages between servers.
Throwmail - the proprietary name for MacXperts' disposable email - 'virtual PO Box addresses'- a system used to forward your mail to you - without disclosing your primary email address to spammers.
PHP - self-referentially short for Hypertext Pre-Processor - a mechanism used to run server based applications on Internet servers. The strength of PHP lies in its compatibility with many types of database, and its ability to 'talk across' networks using IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or HTTP.
ASP - short for Active Service Pages - provides specifications for a dynamically created Web page - a mechanism by which Web browsers request servers to send pages of HTML code.
MySQL - an open source RDBMS that relies on SQL to process data in a database.
RDBMS - short for Relational Database Management System - a management system for databases that stores information in related tables.
SQL - short for Structured Query Language - a standardised sub-language used in the management of relational databases.
FTP - short for File Transfer Protocol - system for file exchange over the Internet. FTP works in the same way as HTTP - for transferring Web pages from a server to a user's browser - and SMTP - for transferring electronic mail across the Internet, in that like these, FTP uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols in the transfer of data.
HTTP - short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol - programmed rules to define message format and transmission, that enables computers to connect to Internet documents.
SMTP - short for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - rules by which to send email messages between servers.
TCP/IP - short for Transmission Control Protocol - rules that enable different types of computer and network to connect and transfer data.
CYA text - vulgar slang acronym for - 'Cover Your Ass' - refers to text included to safeguard or conceal - identity for example.
